전쟁과 관광·여가는 얼핏 서로 무관해 보이지만, 실은 긴밀하게 얽혀 있습니다. 이번 세미나 <전쟁, 관광, 그리고 여가>에서는 ‘기지의 제국’ 미국을 조명하며 식민주의·전쟁·여가가 만들어내는 복잡한 관계를 이해하고, 탈식민적인 접근을 통해 ‘투어리즘’을 다시 생각해보는 시간을 마련했습니다. 이를 위해 하와이 훌라의 상품화와 팔레스타인 연대 관광(solidarity tours), 한국으로 이어지는 사례들을 중심으로 군사주의가 지역의 관광 산업과 문화적 상상력을 어떻게 형성해 왔는지 비판적으로 살펴봅니다. 밀리투어리즘의 시대에, 관광과 여가는 과연 해방적일 수 있을까요? 함께 답해보는 자리에 여러분들을 초대합니다.

강의 및 진행: 매들린 한(한승화, 피스모모 평화페미니즘연구소 연구위원) 

매들린은 미국과 한국 사이에서 글을 쓰고 연구하며 산다. 미국학 연구자로서 한국에서 진행되고 있는 미국의 군사주의, 기억 및 문화를 다루는 박사 논문을 쓰고 있다.

[FIPS Open Seminar] War, Tourism, and Leisure

While war and tourism may appear unrelated at first glance, they are in fact deeply intertwined. Our seminar, War, Tourism, and Leisure, invites participants to reconsider “tourism” through a decolonial lens by examining the United States’ so-called “empire of bases” and the complex entanglements of colonialism, warfare, and leisure. Through case studies from Hawai‘i, Palestine, and Korea, we will critically explore how militarism has shaped local tourist economies and cultural imaginaries. In an era of militourism, can tourism and leisure be liberatory? We invite you to join us in thinking through this question together.

This seminar will be conducted in Korean and English.

Lecture and Facilitation: Madeline Han(Research Fellow, Feminist Institute for Peace Studies) 

They write and research, living between the United States and South Korea. They are working on dissertation about US militarism, memory, and culture in Korea.

Dates: December 9 and 16, 2025 (Tuesdays), 7:30–9:30 PM
